Typically, a pledge is a promise to give a specific amount on a specific timetable, such as a three-year commitment to give $1000 a year to a capital campaign for a total of $3000, or even a promise to make a single year-end gift. A recurring donation is an often open-ended commitment to make a gift, frequently on a monthly basis, usually through credit card or Electronic Funds Transfer. Recurring donations typically include the donor’s permission to process a gift via credit card on a regular schedule; pledges typically involve sending the donor a pledge reminder so they can decide what method to use to make the gift (but can also be set up to autoprocess via credit card or EFT using your transaction processor).
